A lot of us were trained to call that willfulness. I used to call it that too. But my understanding has been changing the more I explore how we can bring the body back into DBT. Willfulness is ineffective, yes. But being effective requires the skills and the capacity to get there in the first place. If expressing emotion has been punished in a client's life, their nervous system learned that going quiet keeps them safe. So when she says she feels nothing, she may be telling you the truth. What would happen if we slowed wayyyy down? ⏰ Before asking what she feels in her body, we get curious about her relationship with her body in general. What does she do when she's hungry? When she's tired? How does she respond to those signals? And does it make sense to her that "nothing" shows up when she shifts her focus inward? When a client tells you they feel nothing, treat it as data. Our job is to sit back in our seat and leave room for curiosity, so clients can build their own body wisdom at a pace that feels safe. Pushing them somewhere unfamiliar usually makes things go even quieter. What's your go-to question when a client says they feel nothing? If you're looking for more step-by-step guidance that you can use in your sessions, grab my DBT Cheat Sheet at the link in my bio to download my free PDF where I walk you through my 4-step DBT process. Print it out, bring it to your next session, and let me know how it goes 😉 #SomaticDBT #DBTTherapist #DBTConsultation #Mindfulness #TraumaInformedTherapy
