AI ‘Mandela’ Videos Target ANC Loyalty Among Older Voters Ahead of South Africa’s Local Elections Young South Africans are circulating AI-generated videos of Nelson Mandela urging older voters to abandon the ANC ahead of the 4 November 2026 local government elections. The clips, spreading on TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp and X, feature a digitally reconstructed Mandela telling elders not to vote for the party he once led, with users openly saying they show them to their grandparents. The trend follows earlier, lighter AI Mandela content—the late president DJing amapiano or riding a Sixty60 bike which drew requests for a political version. By late October 2026, those requests appear answered, with posts on X describing the anti-ANC videos as “live.” The timing is deliberate: the ANC, which lost its national majority in 2024, still relies on residual loyalty among older voters who associate it with Mandela and the liberation struggle, while younger South Africans facing unemployment and inequality, feel far less attachment. The Electoral Commission has partnered with tech companies to monitor AI-generated election disinformation. Whether the tactic shifts votes is unproven; what is clear is that the technology has made the attempt cheap, fast and shareable inside family WhatsApp groups. #TSAnews #TSA
