A Columbia University chemist named Ronald Breslow had just published a paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society saying intelligent aliens would probably be reptiles. Breslow was not a fringe guy. He was one of the most respected chemists in the country, and his paper was about why the building blocks of life on Earth all lean the same chemical direction. His conclusion went further than chemistry. On other worlds, he wrote, life could be built on the mirror image of our molecules, and the creatures running those planets could be advanced versions of dinosaurs. His exact reasoning was simple. Dinosaurs ruled Earth until an asteroid wiped them out and gave mammals their opening. On a planet where that asteroid never hits, the reptiles keep evolving. Millions of years past where ours stopped. And he ended the paper with a warning that made the news rounds: "We would be better off not meeting them." A peer reviewed science paper said the smart aliens are probably reptilian and advised against contact. Mainstream television reported it straight, no laughter, no mocking panel segment.
