My mother lived like this when she was a child. When she read the book and watched the movie The Glass Castle, it triggered her into a panic attack because that was exactly how she lived. When I read the book, I cried because I kept on thinking about that.

ah yes, the classic seasonal summer pests: flies, wasps, mosquitos, wrappers, cans, and miscellaneous dirty kitchen utensils. I hate when I leave my window open and a grimy pan gets into my bedroom. (glad you got out of there!)

I grew up in a house like this. When I bring it up, my mom minimizes and denies. I also have pictures. My house now IS actually spotless. My children will never grow up the way we did.
