NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny has revealed disturbing new details about the killing of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Frimpong in the Bronx. According to Chief Kenny, three individuals wearing hoodies and surgical masks approached Javits near Crotona Park on the morning of October 29. Javits immediately sensed danger and started running. All three allegedly chased him, and he was shot in the back. But what happened afterward is particularly disturbing. 1. JAVITS'S BACKPACK WAS STOLEN As Javits ran for his life, he dropped his backpack. According to police, instead of helping, another person allegedly took the bag. It has not been recovered. 2. THE ATTACKERS RETURNED FOR THE SHELL CASINGS Chief Kenny says the attackers went back and collected the shell casings. For those who may not know, shell casings are the empty metal cartridges left behind when many firearms are fired. They can provide investigators with important forensic evidence, including markings that may help connect a shooting to a particular firearm. Police believe the attackers knew what they were doing when they returned to collect them. 3. HOW DID THEY ESCAPE? According to the chief, the three individuals ran to the Freeman Avenue/Southern Boulevard subway station, jumped the turnstiles and boarded a southbound No. 5 train. Investigators tracked their movements into Manhattan. 4. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THREE POSSIBLE MOTIVES Chief Kenny says detectives are examining three possibilities: Bullying: Whether the shooting was connected to the alleged bullying Javits experienced at school. Robbery: Whether the incident began as an attempted robbery. Mistaken identity: Whether the attackers believed Javits was a rival gang member. Importantly, police say they have found nothing indicating that Javits himself was involved in gang activity. 5. NYPD HAS SUBPOENAED THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION This is another significant development. Chief Kenny disclosed that investigators sought school records concerning the alleged bullying but had to obtain a subpoena because the Department of Education would not provide the information without one. The records could help detectives investigate what happened before Javits was killed. AND WHO WAS JAVITS? Chief Kenny described him as a young student who was trying to build a future. He reportedly left his phone at home voluntarily so he could concentrate on his schoolwork.
