He knew what was coming and was way more experienced to know they couldn't pull out of that situation. I believe he wanted to hold it together so the girl would hold it together. Once you are experienced enough you just know.

its an old plane without de- icing and stormwarning. the pilot could do nothing to save the plane thats why he is praying

both pilots did everything they can, if you listen to the audio the co pilot was as clear as someone can be in that situation and the Captain pilot at the very least did not hit anyone on the street because the only casualties were the lives on the plane
