So I have several Mexican friends and they have introduced me to this tradition and it has been very healing for me honestly. This was my second year putting up the ofrenda and I was going to include my great grandparents but wasn’t able to get to the store to print out pictures. I was telling one of my friends about that and said “well it’s ok I’ll add them next year, they’re elderly British people who lived through the world wars so they probably would have been confused by the whole concept anyway” 🤣🤣🤣

I've thought about this too🤔 but unfortunately, according to traditional Mexica beliefs, Día de los Muertos isn't necessarily a time when just any spirit or deceased pet returns. The tradition is rooted in a specific spiritual understanding of death and the afterlife, particularly Mictlán. Basically the ancestor had to believe in mictlan to go and return

We do a remembrance dinner every year. This year we lost our dog and my six-year-old has a hard time with it. The dinner I think helped her.
