@bellsmessina: This is SUCH a complex question, but at the same time, the answer is actually quite simple… and I think that’s because when it comes to money and debt, it’s rarely JUST about logic. There’s often so much emotion, personal experience and circumstance tangled up in the financial decisions we make, even when we know better. I’m really trying to be as open and transparent as possible about my own experiences, the decisions I’ve made and the lessons I’m learning along the way. Not because I have all the answers, but because I’m hoping that by sharing my mistakes, I might help someone else avoid making the same ones ♥️

But like why was financial literacy not taught in school, because as a young person like 18-22 I got myself in a lot of debt, I would get loans constantly because I was being approved and I thought they would look good on my credit report because I could make the repayments on time but now as a 28 year old I’m still trying to dig myself out of this hole that I dug because I had no idea what I was doing 😅

You said previously, that you borrowed privately from two family members. How do they feel when you say go on holidays etc knowing you owe them money? I ask, because I have lent a substantial amount money to a family member and I get infuriated when then are still continuing to spend on poor choices/social life over paying me back.

No hate, genuinely curious. Why would you spend so much money doing the BDH, when it’s structurally and aesthetically ok - when you are in this debt? Do you feel influencing is a double edged sword where it makes you money, but you would spend more to create content and keeping up

Yep. Letting a man take ‘control’ of the finances, isn’t masculine, it’s incredibly dangerous. Good on you for speaking about it. 👏🏼

Learning about finances is left to us to learn about in life. It’s so irresponsible of our education system that we can graduate high school knowing how to anti differentiate to find the area under a curve but not know about the costs associated with buying and owning a property or how interest on credit cards is calculated daily! Your financial literacy is a work in progress and your girls will learn so much from your experience. And legal bills - you can’t talk about them but my God, do they add up.

I know being a stay at home mum is awesome and good for your kids but all people should be financially independent if you can.

I’ve been saying this since leaving high school (in 2010) - we need a class about finances/tax/super!!! And it should be mandatory at least for 1 year - so crazy - yes there’s versions of “business” but it’s not for personal finances!

Thank you for sharing!! Love how honest you have been since being divorced. I remember throughout mine I was worried about money but I was the one with the savings so I can’t imagine what it would be like without that. You sharing this helps women know that it is okay to have debt, it is okay to leave your marriage. It all works out in the end!

My situation was a little bit different but I totally agree - I’m lucky I’m not totally up the creek and that is 100% down to the fact that I kept working while i was married… certainly not full time but enough to keep my foot in the door enough to work enough now at a decent paying job that whilst I’m not at all where I thought I’d be financially - I’m also not down the creek. That said -it wasn’t easy at all to do at the time. Very little support to keep working because he didn’t want me working so child care etc was all on me

if you need support with your financial debt, check out financial counsellors! they can help with payment plans and interest and support you to address them

I’d also like to point out Bella that you were with someone you loved and trusted and who understood finances, of course you would let them take over the finances especially at the age you were. I think it’s awesome you’re sharing this!

I understand what you’re saying about it doesn’t matter how you got there. I think it’s just important to clarify whether you know how you got there because a debt repayment journey involves people supporting you and I guess they do want to know that you know how it happened in order to not repeat that situation ☺️
