Hindi kasi binabasa ng mga Katoliko ang mga sinasabi ng mga early fathers nila. Augustine clarifies that Christ is the foundation upon which the church is built, and even Peter's faith is based on this foundatioln.  Basil of Seleucia believed that the "rock" in the verse "on this rock I will build my church" referred to Peter's confession of faith, not Peter himself. John Chrysostom believed the rock in Matthew 16:18 was Peter's confession of faith that Christ is the Son of God, not Peter himself.
