@gingerfootgarden: One of my favorite things about growing turmeric is that I can save part of my harvest to grow again next season! When harvesting, you’ll notice two main types of rhizomes: Mother rhizomes: The larger, thicker central pieces from which the plant grows and produces branches. Finger rhizomes: The smaller, elongated rhizomes that develop around the mother. I like saving healthy mother rhizomes for planting because they often have plenty of stored energy and viable buds that can produce new shoots. That doesn’t mean the fingers can’t be planted, though! Healthy finger rhizomes with viable buds can grow new turmeric plants, too. Since I grow turmeric in Maryland, I store my planting rhizomes indoors during winter and start them again when it’s time to prepare for the growing season. One harvest can give you both food for your kitchen and planting material for next year’s garden.
