rye bread and spearmint get their smell from the same molecule, carvone, with its 3D shape flipped into the mirror image 🍞🌿 today's quiz in the app is on this molecule: search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app carvone stereochemistry for orgo 1: a stereocenter is an sp3 carbon with four different groups. in carvone it is the ring carbon that holds the side chain: it has an H, the side chain, the ring path toward the C=O and the ring path toward the C=C. the C=O carbon and the carbon with the CH3 are sp2, so they have only 3 groups and cannot be stereocenters. flip that one stereocenter and you get the enantiomer: a non-superimposable mirror image with the same formula and the same bonds. enantiomers share melting point, boiling point and solubility, but they bind chiral receptors differently, and that is why your nose reads one enantiomer of carvone as caraway (the taste of rye bread) and the other as spearmint. how to assign R or S with the CIP rules: 1) rank the four groups by the atomic number of the first atom, so Br beats C beats H. 2) tie? go one atom further out and compare the sets of atoms, atom by atom: CH2CH3 is (C,H,H) and beats CH3 which is (H,H,H). a double bond counts the atom twice. 3) point the lowest priority, usually H, away from you, then trace 1 to 2 to 3: clockwise is R, counterclockwise is S. if the H points toward you, trace it anyway and flip your answer. wedge and dash alone never tell you R or S, only the ranking does. worked example on slide 3: (S)-2-bromobutane, Br first, then ethyl, then methyl, H in back, counterclockwise. slide 2 shows the stereocenter on carvone, and the in-app quiz asks you to rank its groups and call R or S yourself. which of the 3 checks do you always botch when the H points the wrong way? 👇 #ochem #organicchemistry #stereochemistry #studytok #examprep
