@factlab.daily: The Day Mount St. Helens Lost More Than 1,000 Feet of Its Summit 🌋 On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted with such force that the mountain itself was permanently reshaped. What began with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake quickly triggered one of the largest landslides ever recorded. The entire north face of the volcano collapsed, suddenly releasing pressure inside the mountain and producing a devastating lateral blast that raced across the surrounding landscape. The eruption flattened hundreds of square kilometres of forest, sent ash high into the atmosphere and removed roughly 1,300 feet from the volcano’s summit. Fifty-seven people were killed, including volcanologist David A. Johnston, who had been monitoring the mountain from an observation post several miles away. The disaster became one of the most important volcanic events ever studied in the United States, dramatically improving scientists’ understanding of lateral eruptions, landslides and volcanic hazard monitoring.
