MY EXPERIENCE AT CVPH – PATIENTS DESERVE TO KNOW THEIR RIGHTS. I am sharing my experience so others know what happened and can advocate for themselves. I entered CVPH with a known history of PTSD and previous medical trauma. Despite disclosing this, my experience was profoundly traumatic. HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED: • Ketamine: Ketamine was used despite my disclosed PTSD history. The potential psychological consequences of using a dissociative medication in someone with significant trauma should have been carefully considered. • Physical restraint: I was physically restrained while awake and unmedicated. Given my PTSD, this was an extremely distressing experience. I have serious questions about the necessity, authorization, and monitoring of this restraint. • Lack of a room: Initially, there was no room available for me, adding further distress to an already vulnerable situation. • Allergy and refusal disregarded: Skin glue was used despite my known allergy and my explicitly communicating that I did NOT consent to its use. • Shoulder concerns: A shoulder sling was left on a table without adequate explanation. Following this encounter, I developed shoulder pain and clicking. MY PATIENT-RIGHTS CONCERNS These incidents raise serious questions about compliance with: • NY 10 NYCRR §405.7 – Hospital patient-rights protections, including informed consent, refusal of treatment, and restraint safeguards. • NY 10 NYCRR §405.7(b)(5) – Requirements governing restraint necessity, authorization, supervision, and monitoring. • Federal 42 CFR §482.13(e) – Federal protections against inappropriate restraint use, including restraints for convenience, coercion, or retaliation. • NY Public Health Law §2805-d – Legal protections concerning informed consent in qualifying circumstances. I believe these circumstances warrant a formal investigation into whether applicable laws and hospital policies were followed. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE My PTSD has significantly worsened. I am experiencing nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks, and screaming in my sleep. I am now afraid of seeking medical care and struggle to trust healthcare providers. I have a pacemaker and ongoing medical needs. I cannot simply avoid hospitals because of how I was treated. I should not have to choose between receiving necessary medical care and protecting my psychological well-being. THE RESPONSE HAS MADE MATTERS WORSE. When I attempted to seek accountability, I was told that nothing further could be done. That is unacceptable. Investigations, provider accountability, policy reviews, and mandatory staff retraining are all possible avenues. WHAT I WANT: 1. A formal investigation into everyone involved. 2. Appropriate accountability for substantiated failures. 3. Mandatory PTSD and trauma-informed care training. 4. Education regarding ketamine and patients with trauma histories. 5. Respect for documented allergies, informed consent, and treatment refusals. 6. Improved restraint safeguards and patient protections. 7. A meaningful written response and corrective action plan. I am not demanding perfection from healthcare providers. I am demanding dignity, safety, informed consent, and accountability. I should not leave a hospital more traumatized than when I entered. I should not have to fight to have my PTSD acknowledged, and I should not have to beg for someone to investigate what happened. I WANT ACCOUNTABILITY. I WANT CHANGE. AND I WANT TO PREVENT ANOTHER PATIENT FROM EXPERIENCING THIS. Patients are human beings, not procedures. We deserve to feel safe, heard, and respected. #cvph #champlainvalleyhospital #uvm #ptsd #medicaltrauma
