The Great Flood of 1955 is still the worst flood in Delaware River history. In August 1955, Hurricane Connie drenched the region, and just days later the remnants of Hurricane Diane stalled heavy rain over the already-soaked ground. On August 19 and 20, the Delaware River surged to record levels from the Poconos down past Trenton, where the river rose 8.6 feet above flood stage, and river towns in Warren, Hunterdon, and Mercer counties, including Phillipsburg, Lambertville, and Trenton, were swamped. The flood tore apart the river crossings that connected New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Four free bridges were destroyed or severely damaged, including the Yardley–Wilburtha, Point Pleasant–Byram, and Portland–Columbia bridges, along with a center span of the Northampton Street bridge between Phillipsburg and Easton. For a few hours, the Trenton–Morrisville toll bridge on Route 1 was the only Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission crossing still open. In all, 99 people died in the Delaware River Basin. The worst single tragedy struck Camp Davis on Brodhead Creek in the Poconos, where a 30-foot wall of water killed 37 people, 21 of them from New Jersey, mostly families from Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties.
