Merlin helicopters were sent to follow the Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov as it monitored Nato-allied training off the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Between September 29 and October 8, the aircraft used onboard sensors to track Russian intelligence-gathering vessels monitoring Exercise Strike Warrior off the Scottish coast. Meanwhile, Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dauntless monitored Russian frigate RFN Neutrashimy as it escorted a sanctioned cargo ship through the English Channel between October 1 and 14. In a separate operation, HMS Tyne intercepted Russian landing ship RFN Aleksandr Shabalin in mid-October as it escorted another cargo vessel through the Channel. Lieutenant Commander Sam Fields, commanding officer of HMS Tyne, said the operations demonstrated the Navy's ability to respond quickly and maintain a constant presence around the UK. The interceptions come as Britain announces a fresh package of sanctions targeting Russia's war effort, amid continued tensions between Moscow and Nato. The Royal Navy says it remains ready to respond at a moment's notice to protect Britain's interests 🇬🇧
