@troika2005: China has rewritten the rules on who keeps what when a marriage ends, moving away from the automatic 50/50 split that governed divorce settlements for decades. The Supreme People’s Court amended the Marriage and Family section of the Civil Code, effective February 1, 2025. Under the previous system, property acquired during a marriage was generally divided equally regardless of who earned the money or whose name was on the title. That has changed. Assets are now awarded based on who actually paid for them or can prove financial contribution, whether through bank transfers, contracts or payment receipts. Property brought into the marriage, or gifted by a spouse’s parents, stays with the original owner and is no longer treated as shared matrimonial property. Non-financial contributions, such as staying home to raise children or manage the household, no longer carry the same legal weight they once did under the old framework. Officials have said the previous rule sometimes encouraged so-called “divorce for profit,” particularly in cases where one partner held significantly higher earnings or assets than the other. The reform runs alongside a 30-day cooling-off period already required for mutual-consent divorces, which allows either spouse to withdraw their application before it is finalized. Early figures from the first quarter of 2025 showed divorce filings down by about 24 percent compared with the same period the previous year. Critics, including women’s rights advocates, have argued the changes disproportionately disadvantage spouses, often women, who contributed unpaid domestic labor rather than direct income, making it harder to leave a marriage with an equal share of what was built during it. Supporters counter that the system now rewards documented contribution over blanket entitlement, and that it curbs opportunistic claims on a partner’s pre-existing wealth.

So China's new divorce law is...very controversial I.m.o....so if a house wife ask for a divorce ...she doesn't get 50/50 of the house because she didn't contribute a cent to the mortgage loan/ bond...what must she do now...live on the street..no ways is this fair...what are your thoughts 💯
