Stirner Chan my beloved . . . The question of whether morality requires a divine or objective foundation has been debated by philosophers for centuries. Within many religious traditions, moral principles are understood as expressions of divine authority, natural law, or an objective moral order. Secular philosophical approaches, however, offer alternative explanations for moral behavior, including empathy, rational reflection, social cooperation, individual preferences, and concern for the well-being of others. Max Stirner, a 19th-century German philosopher best known for his 1844 work The Ego and Its Own, developed a radical critique of moral obligations, religious authority, and abstract ideals that claim authority over the individual. His philosophy of egoism challenges the assumption that individuals must subordinate themselves to supposedly universal moral principles. Stirner did not necessarily argue that individuals should behave violently, selfishly in the conventional sense, or without consideration for others. Rather, he questioned why concepts such as duty, morality, and humanity should automatically possess authority over an individualโ€™s choices. From this perspective, personal relationships, cooperation, and even compassion can emerge from individual desires and interests rather than obedience to externally imposed moral commandments. This raises an important distinction between moral motivation and moral justification. A person may have strong reasons to avoid harming others without believing that morality exists as an objective, universal truth. However, explaining why someone chooses not to cause harm is not necessarily the same as establishing why causing harm would be morally wrong. The broader philosophical debate remains unresolved, with religious and secular thinkers offering different accounts of moral truth, human motivation, and ethical responsibility. #MaxStirner #Egoism #Philosophy #Ethics #MoralPhilosophy
