#hypergamy Hypergamy is the tendency to seek romantic or marital partners who have a higher social, financial, or educational status than oneself. The term originates from the Greek words “hyper,” meaning “above,” and “gamos,” meaning “marriage.” Historically, hypergamy referred to marrying someone from a higher social class, but today it is commonly discussed in the context of dating, relationships, psychology, and gender dynamics. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, some researchers suggest that women historically developed preferences for partners who could provide resources, protection, and stability, particularly during pregnancy and raising children. However, these explanations remain debated, and human attraction is influenced by far more than evolutionary instincts. Social and economic factors also contribute to hypergamy. In traditional societies, women often had fewer opportunities to earn money, own property, or achieve financial independence. Consequently, marrying a wealthier or higher-status partner could provide greater security and social mobility. In modern dating culture, hypergamy is sometimes described as the tendency to pursue someone perceived as more successful, wealthy, attractive, intelligent, or socially influential. For example, a woman earning $40,000 annually who specifically seeks a partner earning $150,000 may be demonstrating financial hypergamy. However, preferring a financially stable partner does not automatically mean someone is hypergamous. Importantly, hypergamy is not exclusive to women. Men can also pursue partners with higher social status, wealth, education, or prestige. Additionally, people may prioritize compatibility, emotional connection, physical attraction, shared values, or personality over status. Hypergamy does not necessarily imply manipulation, greed, or an inability to love genuinely. It describes a pattern of partner selection rather than a person’s morality. While the concept has become popular in online discussions about relationships, claims that all women are naturally hypergamous or will inevitably abandon their partners for someone more successful are oversimplifications unsupported by universal scientific evidence.
