There's a well-known verse about putting away childish things once you become an adult. Most people have heard it quoted their entire lives. Almost nobody has heard it explained. What are the childish things, exactly? Nobody says. The childish things are the inability to accept truth without needing fantasy and dependency wrapped around it. It's needing a story softer than reality in order to function. It's needing someone else to hold you up because you haven't built the capacity to hold yourself up yet. Putting that down is not a metaphor. It's the actual work of becoming an adult. On the other side of that work is independence — becoming a whole person who has found their true self, and with it, their true value. But the growth doesn't stop there. The next level is interdependence, where independent people connect and bring their value to something bigger than themselves, in service of others. This is where sovereignty is actually found. This is where real freedom lives. This is where genuine friendship becomes possible — not the kind built on mutual need, but the kind built on mutual contribution. Most people never get here, not because they lack the desire, but because nobody ever named the childish things they were still carrying. I am an interdisciplinary educator and Systems Architect for Human Development. My work is about naming exactly what has to be put down, so people can actually reach the freedom on the other side of it.
