At the heart of our Milky Way galaxy lies Sagittarius A, a supermassive black hole orbited by a unique family of cosmic objects known as the S-star cluster. Driven by immense gravitational forces, these stars move along extreme and incredibly fast paths. For instance, the famous star S2 helped scientists confirm the very existence of the black hole, while the record-holding star S301 completes a full orbit in just 8.7 Earth years, accelerating up to 8% of the speed of light. It was long believed that the powerful tidal forces of a black hole would inevitably tear complex cosmic structures apart, but recent discoveries have shattered this assumption. Astronomers have identified D9, the first confirmed binary star system found orbiting Sagittarius A. Despite the overwhelming gravitational disruption nearby, these two stars manage to maintain their mutual bond, dancing together in lockstep around the gravitational monster. On a smaller scale, the universe is filled with X-ray binaries, where a stellar-mass black hole pairs up with a single companion star. In these systems, the black hole gradually strips and "steals" matter from its partner. This captured gas swirls into a scorching accretion disk, heating up to millions of degrees and emitting bright X-rays that reveal the exact location of the otherwise invisible predator. #blackhole #astro #solarsystem #sciencetok - @holvek
