I think one of the most underrated qualities a person can have is knowing when to keep their mouth shut. We've all been in conversations where someone is so busy thinking about what they're going to say next that they're barely listening to the person speaking. Or situations where someone feels the need to share their opinion on absolutely everything, even when they don't fully understand what's being discussed. And sometimes we're guilty of doing exactly the same thing. We interrupt people before they've finished explaining themselves. We respond to things we haven't properly understood. We say things in the heat of the moment that we later wish we'd kept to ourselves. And I think a lot of unnecessary arguments and misunderstandings could be avoided if we simply learnt to listen a little more. Because listening isn't just about waiting for your turn to speak. It's about genuinely trying to understand what the other person is saying. And being wise with your words isn't about having something clever to say in every conversation. It's about recognising whether what you're about to say is actually worth saying. Sometimes you need to ask a question instead of making an assumption. Sometimes you need to hear someone out instead of immediately defending yourself. And sometimes you need to accept that you have nothing useful to add. Not every thought needs to be spoken. Not every opinion needs to be shared. And not every silence needs to be filled.
