@kashpatel09: Miguel Alonso Maldonado, described as an illegal alien, is accused of physically smashing the Iwo Jima monument, which commemorates the U.S. Marines who raised the American flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. After a judge set his bond at $2,500, the sense of outrage among people who hold that memorial sacred was immediate and justified. Federal prosecutors stepped in with charges under federal property laws, bringing the maximum possible consequence to 10 years in federal prison. That escalation is the right call. Military monuments exist because the service and sacrifice behind them demand permanent recognition. When someone destroys that recognition and a local court responds with a $2,500 bond, the federal government has both the authority and the moral obligation to respond more forcefully. This federal charge is that response.
