Last night in Columbia, Maryland, Bruce Springsteen turned a festival stage into a call for solidarity. At Tom Morello’s inaugural Power to the People festival, just outside Washington, he reminded the crowd that music can still carry conscience, courage and the voices too often ignored. “Let them hear you in Washington,” he urged, a line that felt less like a slogan than a plea to keep showing up for the America people still believe in. Springsteen opened his set with “Streets of Minneapolis,” welcomed Joan Baez for “Chimes of Freedom,” and joined the day’s artists for a closing rendition of John Lennon’s “Power to the People.” For one night, rock and protest music became the same thing again: not nostalgia, but a shared promise that peace, justice and hope only matter when people are willing to stand together and make themselves heard.
