In August she lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed by 13,792 votes, although one group spent about $30 million on her side: United Democracy Project, AIPAC's super PAC, reported $10.5 million for her and $20.1 million against El-Sayed to the FEC. The break came over a church event. Rep. Debbie Dingell, who organized it, says she told Stevens not to come because the fight had become a distraction. It started with an ad by Rebellion PAC, an outside group, that blamed grocery prices on US money going to Israel. Stevens said it echoed El-Sayed's own words; El-Sayed said he did not make it and disagreed with it. Republicans hold 53 Senate seats. Democrats need a net gain of four, and five if they lose Michigan. Chuck Schumer, who backed Stevens in the primary, called it "a despicable betrayal". Donald Trump called it "a thing called bravery". Stevens says it is "this one vote". In August she called Rogers "another rubber stamp for Donald Trump's dangerous agenda."
