This is why I’m voting. Why are you voting, Iowa? In 2021, I left Iowa to start a new life with my husband. We wanted to have kids, but because of the state of maternal healthcare in Iowa and a blood condition that I have things we’re going to be extra challenging. We moved back after our boys were born to be closer to family, and I quickly realized this is not the Iowa I remember. Parents are being fined for their kids playing kick ball in the same streets I grew up on, queer kids are being targeted, children are losing access to their healthcare because of misinformation, and discrimination is oozing down from the top layers of our government. We moved to a small development near a town I grew up in, and were elated to see a flourishing immigrant population. An Indian grocery store in Iowa? Amazing. But then the reality of how Iowa has changed culturally came to me one summer night like a cat dragging in a dead mole. I watched one of my neighbors get hit by a car while riding his scooter. I had been on a walk with my family when it happened. He was just a kid playing in the neighborhood, and another neighbor was not paying attention. It was all hands on deck as every neighbor with any amount of emergency service training leapt into action. As paramedics arrived, I noticed two kids standing near by that looked just like him. I spoke to them and realized they were his sibilings. I stayed with them after the ambulance was gone and waited for their parents. It was his sisters birthday. I sat with her, learned where her parents had immigrated from in Africa, and what her favorite hello kitty character was. I learned the names of her sibilings and what their favorite things were. At one point though, she turned to me and asked,” Will my brother be okay? Are those police officers racist?” And my heart broke. A child shouldn’t have to live in a world where that is a question they feel like they need to ask. She told me about the racism she saw at school, and how no one did anything about it. I graduated from that school district 12 years earlier, and it pained me to know that things had gotten worse for children of color there- not better like I had hoped. Iowa, we have a chance to make this state great again. Please don’t give us another 10 years of this same nightmare. Our communities need change… now. #iowa #iowanews #iowapolitics #vote
