CL is not something we want in our herd, and it’s certainly something we work to prevent. But we also recognize the realities of the wether goat industry and that disease management isn’t always as black and white as social media makes it seem. There are different philosophies when it comes to managing CL. Some choose to cull, while others choose to manage it through isolation, containment, sanitation and addressing abscesses when they occur. We choose to manage rather than automatically cull. That doesn’t mean we take it lightly or believe it’s harmless. It means we recognize that responsible livestock production sometimes involves making management decisions that aren’t one-size-fits-all. Our goal is to be transparent about real-life livestock production, including the parts that aren’t always pretty or easy.

For those who are curious it’s called Caseous Lymphadenitis. No cure and it can spread easily. The animals that have it need be isolated or culled

be extra careful letting her out to pasture before the draining is done. CL is able to get into the soil and continue the cycle of infection, even in a clean herd. i hate how many breeders lie or downplay this damn disease! having so many donors come back positive with infection present that it could literally upend your operation to cull them all is an incredibly disappointing example of where we’re at as an industry. (and you handled that lance like a seasoned pro girlfriend, major props to you!!)
