Bad things happen to people. Kids get cancer, which means it’s not karma or their fault. I despise the thought that bad things are our own fault or that there is “justice” in those bad things. That they’re some sort of justifiable retribution.

For anyone confused: being trafficked means someone exploited, manipulated, coerced or controlled another human being for their own benefit. The responsibility belongs to the person doing the exploiting. You can question our choices, dissect our circumstances, or imagine what you think you would have done differently. But none of that transfers responsibility from the person who exploited us onto victims. We are responsible for finding our way through what happened. We were never responsible for someone else’s decision to exploit us. And if your response to hearing about human trafficking is to scrutinize the person who survived it rather than the person who profited from it, you might want to examine why that is.
