Formed in Salford in 1962 by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash, The Hollies became one of the most successful British bands of the 1960s and 1970s. Their initial lineup featured Clarke, Nash, Tony Hicks, Eric Haydock, and Don Rathbone. Over the years, the band saw some changes, with Bobby Elliott replacing Rathbone in 1963 and Bernie Calvert stepping in for Haydock in 1966. Clarke, Hicks, and Nash were the main songwriters until Nash's departure in late 1968 to form Crosby, Stills & Nash; Terry Sylvester then joined the group. While Clarke briefly left from late 1971 to early 1973 (replaced by Mikael Rickfors), the Clarke/Hicks/Elliott/Calvert/Sylvester lineup remained until Calvert and Sylvester left in 1981. The band continued with various personnel changes, including a brief return by Nash in the 1980s and Clarke's final departure in 2000, eventually stabilizing in 2004 with Hicks, Elliott, Peter Howarth, Steve Lauri, Ray Stiles, and Ian Parker. The Hollies enjoyed significant popularity in the UK and Europe during the mid-1960s with hits like "Stay," "I'm Alive" (their first UK number one), and "Look Through Any Window." Their US chart success began with "Bus Stop" in 1966. They continued to have hits on both sides of the Atlantic, including "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" (which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1988 upon re-release), "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress," and "The Air That I Breathe." Overall, they had over 30 charting singles in the UK and 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100. One of the few UK groups from the early 1960s, alongside the Rolling Stones, who never disbanded, The Hollies retired from touring following Hicks and Elliott's retirement in 2026. Their achievements were recognized with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. #TheHollies #RockAndPop #MusicHistory #GrammyNominees #onthisday - @richardakers27
