@resume_assassin_mary: Interviewer: Why is there a gap on your resume? First of all, can we stop treating employment gaps like they're some terrible secret?! People get laid off. Companies restructure. Life happens. And sometimes finding the right job takes a heck of a lot longer than expected. As a former recruiter, I can tell you that having a gap isn't automatically a dealbreaker. But I WOULD be thoughtful about how you explain it. Here's what I'd say: 1️⃣ IF YOU WERE LAID OFF: My position was eliminated during a company restructuring. Since then, I've been focused on finding a role where I can use my experience in [specific area], which is one of the reasons this opportunity caught my attention. 2️⃣ IF YOU'VE BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR MONTHS: I've been actively exploring opportunities, but I'm being selective about finding a position that aligns with my background and long-term goals. I'm especially interested in [specific responsibility] because that's where I know I can contribute. 3️⃣ IF YOU TOOK TIME OFF FOR PERSONAL REASONS: I stepped away from my career to take care of some personal priorities. I'm ready to return to work and excited about the opportunity to put my experience to use again. 4️⃣ IF YOU LEFT A TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT: I decided it was time to move on from my previous position. I wanted to be thoughtful about my next move rather than rush into something that wasn't the right fit. And PLEASE remember this... You don't owe an interviewer your entire life story. You don't have to explain every month you weren't employed. And you certainly don't need to make up a consulting business to fill the gap. Keep it short. Tell the truth. Then bring the conversation back to what you can offer. Have you ever had an interviewer question a gap on your resume? I'm curious how you handled it! 👇 📌 Save this before your next interview and send it to someone who's job searching. 💜 #resume #interview #interviewtips #careeradvice #jobtok

I answer with integrity & honesty. Caregiving of family members in itself is a FT job we didn’t sign up for, let alone get paid to do. Life is precious, time is borrowed.

I answer honestly. My son passed away and I needed to take time to grieve the loss of him before returning to the workforce. Generally speaking, they feel bad for even having asked. As they should bc my personal life is not their business.

i make them regret asking by telling them the troubles and tribulations of taking care of your grandmother with dementia. the silence and quick jump to the next topic is a power move

It's an invasive question that I don't answer and would never ask perspective applicants. The years of work and volunteering show consistency, a gap is irrelevant. Now, the only time it should be questioned is if there are tons of random gaps. One gap is a "life happens" gap and employers already know that.

📌 Don't spend five minutes defending a six-month employment gap. A quick, honest explanation is enough! Then get back to why you're the right person for the job. 💜

I was laid off from two jobs I genuinely enjoyed over the course of three years, all while unexpectedly losing my brother. Life has a cruel, cruel way of throwing things at you that you never asked for or could have ever prepared yourself for. My resume may have gaps, and honestly, I truly don’t give a damn what employers think about them. I’ve lived through things that have changed me, and sometimes life requires you to step back, regroup, heal, and put yourself first. My spouse has been incredibly supportive and has reminded me that I can take my time or stay home if that’s what I need. That kind of support is everything. The world is upside down enough as it is, and I’ve learned that you have to take care of yourself, too. Companies expect loyalty, professionalism, and two weeks’ notice when you decide to leave, yet many won’t hesitate to let you go without warning or a second thought. It’s a harsh reality, and honestly, it’s exhausting. At the end of the day, no job is worth sacrificing your mental health, your peace, or your well-being. You have to look out for yourself because companies will ultimately look out for their bottom line. Your health matters, too.

You can absolutely say that you were part of a workforce reduction layoff and leave it there.

Recruiters don’t care. Recruiters carry water for companies that enjoy discriminating. Recruiters are the scourge of the earth. Recruiters are the same scammy people as car salesmen and shady real estate agents.
