It could be due to the countries you traveled to or your name coming up on any databases for potential risks. Being a US citizen has nothing to do with it. Anyone can be detained based on specific triggers and/or risk level. If everything is clear - you have nothing to worry about.

I had this happen, too! I sat for a bit and got let go without any questions, and they never told me why. My friends guessed I’d either been gone too long without visiting, or lived in enemy-of-America countries, so I got flagged.

I came back last week from abroad thru the Atlanta airport. I do have global entry so I scanned my face at the kiosk proceded to the window and I was received by an agent who say “you’re all set, welcome back home Walter” 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
