I’ve been saying this. I think this is a holdover attitude from centuries of women not being legally able to have true independence. Until very, VERY recently, women being attached to a man was literally a matter of life or death. If you can’t have a well-paying job, open your own bank account, own property, you had to be attached to a man to literally survive. It’s still conditioned in us as a safety mechanism.

I’ve always desired love and a happily ever after, and that’s only because I wasn’t loved as a child, because my parents weren’t around. I gave myself to many men hoping they’d love me, but never did. Now in my 40s I’ve learned to love myself and stop wanting love from a man. No such thing as happily ever after after all. I’m content to be single forever, if that’s the case. I’m happy with me.

It’s an unspoken indication of: “are you kind, beautiful, sweet, pleasant, and worthy enough to be chosen by a man as his personal lifelong companion?” Because if a man has chosen you, that shows that you are worthy enough to be loved and valued by someone. I’m 34 and I’ve been single since 29. I’m past the judgement, I don’t care how I’m perceived being single. I’m comfortable. What’s hard is how many social gatherings and friend outings I’m not part of anymore because I’m not coupled. That’s been the hardest.
