South Florida weather. Those storms can develop pretty quickly.

Jesus rebuke the enemy. :
Their radom on their nose was covered with clear eyes. It reflected the radar energy back. They could not see the storm with the radar

I heard the air traffic controller say they were just coming into his airpace, whose airspace were they in prior to this?

The plane was not in the sectors airspace but the sector still has the same display as the last sector had. Both controllers should have pointed out the thunderstorm if it was displayed on the ATC display

Jeff Rivard :
Why leave the decision to fly over or thru to Pilot..ATC should simply direct Pilot to 20 mile buffer as you stated is the FAA requires… seems like a simple fix to more potential bad decisions and accidents just like this one..

ATC had known about the huge cluster storm over FL and had a warning for the entire area known as a convective sigmet. This sigmet warns to stay at least 20 miles away from storms. Despite this foreknowledge, they didn't direct the pilot in advance to either turn around or to take a different path outside of that sigmet. Instead, despite the copilot requesting a better ride/path, ATC advised them to proceed, stating that better rides were just ahead, flying them right into the storm core, which caused their crash. Notice how every other plane was guided to avoid the storm -except this one. He needs to be investigated.
My heart hurts so badly. No one should experience this level of terror. 😥
