All jokes aside, I don’t think we talk enough about what working in pharmacy does to your mental health. We’ve normalized being short-staffed, overworked, and expected to do the job of multiple people. I’ve seen pharmacists talk about being the ONLY pharmacist on an entire shift, carrying the responsibility of every prescription, every decision, and every potential mistake. And somehow, we’re supposed to act like that’s normal. But when you’re constantly exhausted, worried about your license, and dreading your next shift, that takes a toll on you. I spent 14 years in pharmacy. And eventually, I realized I was losing pieces of myself trying to survive a career I had worked so hard to build. Walking through this corn maze with my kids reminded me of something. Sometimes you can follow a path for years before realizing it’s not leading you where you want to go. And sometimes finding yourself again means choosing a different path. For me, that meant walking away from pharmacy. I didn’t leave because I couldn’t handle the work. I left because I finally understood what was at stake. It was me or them. And for once, I chose ME. To every pharmacist who feels exhausted, trapped, or like they’re slowly losing themselves, I see you.
