UCLA is ranked 5th in the country this week. The last time the Bruins were ranked that high was October of 2001. They are 8 and 0. Their head coach is Bob Chesney, and UCLA hired him last December. Chesney grew up in Kulpmont, Pennsylvania, which had 2,758 people in it at the last census. It was a coal town. His father coached at the Catholic high school there. So did his uncle. So did his grandfather. Chesney was the ball boy before he was old enough to play. His parents could not pay for his schooling, so he went home in the summers and worked. Some summers that was landscaping. Some summers it was the mine.

"Got me through those years." He started coaching in 2000 as a graduate assistant at a Division III school, then took head coaching jobs at Salve Regina, Assumption, Holy Cross and James Madison. Twenty six years. Eight conference championships. A career record of 132 and 52. Now his father. Bob Chesney Senior is 76 years old and he turns 77 this month. He is at the UCLA football facility from early in the morning until night. He sits in the staff meetings. He helps the defensive linemen. He has no title and he is not on the payroll. The players call him Coach Senior. "He did it one rung at a time. He didn't skip anything." Be straight about what this is, because nobody is doing it for show. A 76 year old man who coached high school football in a coal town is standing on a practice field in Los Angeles watching his son coach the fifth best team in America, and he is there every day, for nothing, because he wants to be.
