She was drinking and he knew that. I think Larry thought they’d get married after the night together and that was them getting back together for good. He is aware of the potential consequences for her so if he does really love her he will marry her. At this point her only option is to get into a quick marriage in order to save herself.

I think bridgerton has made people think things are fine. Like that show glosses over the “indiscretions” but it’s a huge deal. The first season makes it seem like Anthony is over reacting to Simon but it literally can ruin lives.

exactly!!! she would be ruined forever if anyone knew about this. her reputation would be over. she would be cast out of society. she would never get married or have a family or have any influence whatsoever ever again in the high society. her aunts would probably have to cast her out and they might actually be cast out as well, since they are the ones who took her under their wing. for men at the time, as we see by larry’s reaction, it was part of their daily life, it was perfectly okay to engage in premarital sex, but for a woman in high society? it would be over for her. especially, if she ends up pregnant, she’ll be the talk of the town, forever ‘ruined’. the shame she feels over something that probably was amazing for her is just so sad. the oppression of women and their desires at the time was so internalised. she’s probably so ashamed and can’t even understand everything that is going on inside her head. she was with someone she loves, “why did it feel good and it should be shameful and bad??? oh damn i just ruined my life!” All of this is going inside her head and i feel so bad for her

I think it’s a combo of people looking at it through a 2026 lens, people being frustrated at yet another obstacle to this relationship, and general Marian dislike. I feel like Marian isn’t usually a favorite character, so she gets a lot of criticism.
