ATC had known about the huge cluster storm over FL and had a warning for the entire area known as a convective sigmet. This sigmet warns to stay at least 20 miles away from storms. Despite this foreknowledge, they didnt direct the pilot in advance to either turn around or to take a different path outside of that sigmet. Instead, despite the copilot requsting a better ride/path, ATC advised them to proceed, stating that better rides were just ahead, flying them right into the storm core, which caused their crash. He needs to be investigated.
