Soviet attacks suffered heavy losses, particularly during the battles around Suomussalmi and the Mannerheim Line. In February 1940, the Red Army broke through Finnish defenses and forced Finland to negotiate peace. The Moscow Peace Treaty ended the war in March, with Finland surrendering territory but retaining its independence.
