The One Pixel Rule (why Obama's stories stick) Obama could have said 'I was having a difficult morning.' It would have been accurate. You would not remember it. Instead he gives you the alarm going off, the rain, the bad story about him in the New York Times, the umbrella blowing open. Suddenly you are not hearing about a bad morning. You are seeing it. Shaan Puri calls it the One Pixel Rule. Instead of summarising an experience, zoom into one tiny moment and render it fully. Concrete details are easier for the brain to imagine. Things that are easier to imagine are easier to remember. Yes, the whole world tells you to get to the point and be concise. That is true if your goal is efficiency. If your goal is memory, sometimes the details are the point. Watch Obama do it again: a middle-aged woman dressed like she just came from church, a big church hat, a gold tooth, and a private detective. He has a big idea he wants to land, that one voice can change a room. But he does not start with the idea. He starts with the person. The image carries the idea. To apply this, find the big idea you want people to remember. Then ask: what is the one moment where that idea became true? Do not tell the whole journey. Find the pixel. Audiences remember what you render and forget what you summarise. What is the most vivid detail you can still remember from a speech you heard years ago? Drop it below. 🎙️ Chief Story Officer #storytelling #communication #publicspeaking #leadership #presentationskills
