Al-Saeedi Hill Fort Al-Saeedi Castle is a ruined hilltop fortification, sitting upon the top a high volcanic outcrop within the historic settlement known as Qurayyat Al-Milh (The Salt Villages), in Al Jouf Region. At the base of the hill is Kaf Palace, along the mudbrick heritage village. Its position in the Wadi Sirhan corridor meant it was on the major north-south trade route linking northern Arabia with Syria and Transjordan. During her visit in 1878, Lady Anne Blunt described it as the ‘most strategic natural entry’ to the Levant from Arabia. Its elevation and all-round view would have allowed those at the top to see travellers, merchants and pilgrims approaching from any direction. Nabataean sherds of pottery have been found at the summit, leading to the belief that the site could have been in use for at least 2,000 years. This has not been substantiated by archaeological investigations so remains an hypothesis for now. It is very possible though as it’s not far from Dumat Al-Jandal where there was a Nabataean presence. The most striking feature of the site is the magnificent pathway made from black basalt (volcanic) rocks that meanders to the top. It is flanked by solid walls and contains hundreds of steps, some of which are rather steep. When I visited in spring there were flowers bursting from between the stones. The walk to the top is quite an experience, it’s like no other place I have visited in Saudi Arabia. Some sections almost feel a bit like the Great Wall of China, it’s that atmospheric. Whilst there’s little left of the structures once topped the hill it is easy to see why this location was used. The view from the top is spectacular in all directions. Power and dominance of the area would never have been in question for those who controlled this site. Today it’s silent but maybe one day in the future we’ll find out more about its past. I for one think it’s going to be pretty special. #saudiarabia🇸🇦 #heritage #castle
