I have N6 mechanical engineering and I’m currently doing my mechanical fitter apprentice… so to learn this skill do I need a background of electrical engineering?

Scenario you paint on one giving a solution is out of touch with reality. That loss of production might be because of equipment failure, a PLC will not sort that out...just basics, sort out that equipment and we back to full production. A PLC and Scada installation will only give directions on where the problem might be, quite frankly unless you bypass a fault using a PLC...one will still have to go the field to sort out the problem.
My advise will get that Electrical or Instrumentation qualification, employers take their employees on such training especially if one get to factor in the brands and programming languages....Rockwell,ABB,Honeywell,Siemens....hence employers are specific on a brand they want a prospective employee or System Intergrator to have experience on
