Can you imagine, I was manipulated by a woman dying of cancer. She used me after surgery to help her with taking her to appointments, cooking meals, and basically doing everything for her for the last 6 months. She just got the news that she only got 6 months and she became a complete bitch to the only person who was there for her.

Just because you see someone more positively despite their manipulation does not mean you made a mistake. You merely recognized that they'd rather try to convince you then outright force you. Thats a good thing to acknowledge and is actually smart. Imagine someone tries to manipulate you and you scream "get away from me". Their next move may not be so docile as they now believe you are onto them so they are backed into a corner. So you absolutely should act flattered to flattery while still rejecting it. If they become more pushy on their own then obviously match that forceful attitude with an equal resolve yourself and become more demanding.
