@bitesofbostonfoodtours: Did you know that much of modern-day Boston used to be underwater? 🌊 One of the coolest things about Boston is that its history is literally written into the landscape! Hidden in the heart of downtown, “A Once and Future Shoreline” is a public art installation that traces the original edge of Boston Harbor, showing just how much of the city has been built out into the water over the centuries. Through a process known as “wharfing out”, property owners extended the shoreline with wooden wharves, eventually filling in the spaces between them to create new land. What was once the harbor is now streets, buildings, and entire neighborhoods! It's a fascinating reminder that Boston hasn't always looked the way it does today. We love uncovering little-known Boston history, especially the stories you might walk right past without realizing. And there's plenty more to discover (with some delicious food along the way) on a Bites of Boston food tour! 🍴 #BostonHistory #BostonHarbor #BostonLandmarks #ThingsToDoInBoston #BostonFoodTours
So it technically is Cambridge fun fact, but, the Charles River in that area used to take seawater and you could find oyster shells sometimes. It’s right across from the Shell gas station on Memorial Drive the history of that area.
