Inside Mexico City's magnificent Metropolitan Cathedral stands a mysterious black crucifix known as "El Señor del Veneno" (Our Lord of the Poison), surrounded by centuries of Catholic devotion. According to an old Mexican Catholic tradition, a deeply religious man would attend Holy Mass every morning and kneel before a crucifix to pray, ending his devotions by kissing the feet of Our Lord. One day, an enemy who wished to kill him allegedly placed poison on the feet of the crucifix, knowing that the man would eventually kiss them. But when the faithful Catholic approached the image, something extraordinary is said to have happened. According to the legend, the figure of Christ miraculously drew back its feet, preventing the man from touching the poison. The crucifix then began turning black, as though absorbing the poison itself. The man survived, and the image became known as "El Señor del Veneno." Although the miraculous event remains a matter of religious tradition rather than verified historical fact, devotion to the crucifix has endured for generations. Originally venerated in the church of Porta Coeli, the sacred image was transferred to Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral in 1935, where it remains at the Altar of Forgiveness. The centuries-old crucifix was restored in 2018, and its annual feast is celebrated on October 19. For Catholics, the story carries a profound spiritual meaning: just as the image is said to have absorbed poison to save a man's life, Our Lord Jesus Christ willingly suffered upon the Cross to redeem mankind from sin. A remarkable part of Mexico's Catholic heritage. 🇲🇽✝️
