@emilyfoit: Serious question especially when it comes to ShopMy! As a smaller creator who is so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had to work with brands and receive PR, it’s not worth it to pay more in taxes from products than I’ve made on social media, but I feel like I’m missing something! #shopmy #smallcreators #socialmediamarketing #prhaul #smallcreatorsupport
This will be my third year making money as a content creator and you do not have to pay taxes on gifts. PR and tiktok samples are not taxed because there is no posting requirement, it is not a payment.

Real question, is anyone having PR ask for a 1099 to report what they sent? My time in the sun was before this was so huge 🤣 but no one ever asked for one so how would they know you need to pay taxes?

It’s so easy when you set aside!! We paid $750k in taxes last year and it wasn’t a set back bc you are supposed to plan!!!

In Alabama at least, I was told I only have to pay taxes for items that have posting requirements. If there’s no requirements to post it’s considered a gift!

This sparked so many more questions cause I didn’t realize people had to pay taxes on PR if not explicit contract to promote. For one, Like are you setting up a separate business for business expenses then to help with taxes?

Past tax accountant here but I’m for sure going to also include all of the items I purchased and posted hauls about as expenses to offset any income!

So if its “gifted” you aren’t taxed on it, it’s only the money you make off the product that’s taxed! Or at least this is what I’ve been told/ go off of. Or if they pay you a specific amount of money, that money can be taxed. But if someone sends you a shirt as a gift you aren’t taxed on that shirt

Set aside 30% of ANY and ALL earnings Quarterly taxes so you don’t get penalized and write offs within reason 🙌🏼👍🏼

Nope, you’re not overthinking it! Be intentional to set 20-30% aside for taxes if you are getting any brand deals/payouts and if any brands are sending product in exchange for a video then jot down those products in your notes app and the approx value of them. But you also can have some write offs (like your cell phone, editing subscriptions, a home office, etc) that can help offset some of the “profit” you’re making. I ended up going to a tax professional a few years back to help me navigate everything and that’s 100% what I’d recommend if you are starting to make decent $ on social media.

Exactly!! When I found out you still pay taxes on gifted products and collabs I started getting super picky about them and now I do almost no gifted collabs. I think most people don’t realize they have to pay taxes on that “free” item

No because creators have now conflated success with receiving Shopmy gifting. Begging people to come “click around” their Shopmy to hit a status level that allows them to ask for free stuff. Instead of focusing on building genuine platforms. 🤦🏽♀️

I don’t think small gifted products are much to worry about, but I worry more about the bigger influencers getting tons of pr from the same brand and don’t realize they’re going to get a 1099 from those brands end of year. 😅
