I have no interest in writing screenplays but reading a book or two on how to write them really expanded my understanding of what I'm watching in film. highly recommend.

You're not a real cinephile until you watch every movie ever made in chronological order

And don't just watch movies! My wife described film to me as the Lego of art lots of different things coming together to make something new. Having some knowledge of art both photography and painting can help you understand framing and composition. Understanding literature both plays and novels will help with dialogue, themes and character. Understanding music and poetry will help you understand why a single note can radically alter a scene, the rhythm and tempo of a scene and speech and just pure emotion.

I think a big part of taking in any art is being able to recognize the merit in a work even when you didn’t find it particularly “enjoyable” or not for you (or vice versa). Would vastly improve the discourse around movies lol.

Also, learn about the movies, don’t just watch them. Read why The Rules of the Game is regarded the way it is. Listen to interviews where your favorite filmmakers talk about movies and filmmakers who influenced them and then go to those.

Here’s a good way of knowing movies better: Get a criterion subscription and explore.

Don't be afraid to like "bad" things and dislike "good" things. Ask why you like it. Understand that stories will have some plot convenience. Be ok bein uncomfortable. Don't write off a while genre because you didn't like 1 movie in that genre. Feel, feel, and feel again.

I also have broad taste and agree entirely, especially re: paying attention to what surprises you and why, particularly when you have commonalities of your taste and something hits outside of it. Nothing is more helpful than “I usually hate x and love it here, WHY”

I LOVED Wake Up Dead Man so much more than Glass Onion. I adored the scenery. When watching Godzilla Minus One it really hit how much I miss set design. some of my favorite movies have incredible set pieces. The live action Flintstones, James and the Giant Peach, 1408, Jurassic Park 3, Pacific Rim, Ringu, Ju-On, Synecdoche New York

how do I stop getting movies… wrong? I keep coming out of every film I watch with wildly different opinions and interpretations of them than my friends and having to relent on my interpretations to avoid continued criticism. What am I missing? Is there some secret to getting the symbolism and messaging correct?

Could you talk about Andrzej Żuławski’s films? I find the cold war/Berlin wall context in possession particularly fascinating, and need to find time to watch On The Silver Globe

After watching a movie I really like to watch video essays about people analyzing stuff like characters, themes, the story, etc. I really like watching people dig deep into the story.

I think people should dissect their favorite films first. Why that transition works, why the music makes you feel a certain way, visual / dialogue callbacks, lessons learned and character archetypes. I think it’s so much easier to understand terms and specifics when it’s something you’ve naturally enjoyed.

When you analyze a book in class you discuss the author and the time and the genre and what all those things meant at their time. When you analyze a film you do the exact same thing, you just have a few more elements to look at on top of the writing and the author

I love love love a breakdown of exploring an art form. I review comic books and it's so easy to forget that the emotions that are iilicted are part of the point! the artists behind the work are working very hard to invoke that. def writing this down, even if I don't really do movies myself

You don’t have to read allis but I hated The Tree of Life. I didn’t hate it when I first saw it but after being given time to sit with it I just couldn’t stand it. It had nothing to do with the quality of the film it was just that I felt Malick was showing off with the visuals. I understand films are a visual medium but it kinda gets boring when you’re just splashing pictures of space at me for half the runtime. That being said I am going to run through his filmography to try and "prepare" myself to watch it again as I feel I didn’t give it a chance because it wasn’t what I expected

So so so important to get across that movies are more than just plots. Also I would highly recommend not throwing the whole movie out because of one element you don’t like or plot development you don’t “agree with.” Look at the bigger picture. :)

I also think it really helps to be open to the idea of you not necessarily liking a movie but still getting something out of it. My partner is a cinephile and I end up watching a lot of movies I would never have otherwise watched. Some of them I absolutely love and others I can say it wasn't for me but I recognize why it's well regarded, it can be a Good Movie™ without being good to my tastes

Going outside your comfort zone is so, so, so key to this because otherwise you’re never going to discover new things about yourself or your tastes. I’ve considered the Letterboxd official lists to be film classes unto themselves — and even as I learned what I hated, I also learned new nuance or genres or styles that taught me so much that I’d never have experienced otherwise.
