@thenatureparty: Yes, that chick did just stick its rear end out to poop. 🎥 @ rico_borneocross (IG) Some birds are just born looking permanently unimpressed with the world. The Bornean frogmouth (Batrachostomus mixtus) certainly seems to have mastered the expression. But this particular bird has a good reason to be sitting so seriously. It's protecting its young tucked beneath its feathers. Found only on the island of Borneo, this elusive nocturnal bird measures roughly 8–9 inches (20–22 cm) long. Despite its owl-like appearance, it isn't an owl at all. Its name comes from its enormous, frog-like mouth, which opens surprisingly wide to catch insects after dark. By stretching upright, narrowing their eyes, and remaining perfectly still, they can resemble broken branches so convincingly that predators may pass right by without noticing them. Their mottled feathers help complete the disguise. And while this particular frogmouth isn't exactly disappearing into its surroundings, it's giving us a rare look at the parenting behavior of a species that remains poorly studied in the wild. A devoted little parent, a tiny nest, and an expression that suggests raising children is every bit as exhausting in the bird world. 🌲 Get the free monthly Nature newsletter.
