Yes, the iconic English progressive rock band, formed in London in 1968. Their lineup has evolved over the years, featuring 20 full-time musicians, but key members like Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Bill Bruford, Alan White, Tony Kaye, and Rick Wakeman really defined their sound. They were even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017! As pioneers of progressive rock, Yes has explored many musical styles, becoming one of the most successful and influential acts in the genre. They boast 25 studio albums, with over 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums sold in the US and more than 30 million worldwide. Their early days with Anderson, Squire, Bruford, Kaye, and Peter Banks saw them blending original songs with covers across rock, pop, blues, and jazz. After Banks was replaced by Howe in 1970, they shifted towards their signature progressive rock sound, leading to hit albums like The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971) — which featured "Roundabout" — Close to the Edge (1972), and the live album Yessongs (1973). Even with frequent personnel changes, albums like Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973), Going for the One (1977), and Tormato (1978) continued their success. Yes was known for their elaborate stage sets, light shows, and Roger Dean's iconic album covers. After Anderson and Wakeman left in 1980, Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn joined for Drama (1980) before a brief disbandment. Yes reformed in 1983 with Squire, White, Anderson, Kaye, and Rabin, shifting to a more mainstream pop-rock sound. This led to their highest-selling album, 90125 (1983), featuring their only US number-one single, "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and a Grammy for "Cinema." Big Generator (1987) was also a success. Later, an offshoot group, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, formed in 1989, and both factions eventually merged for Union (1991). Yes continued to tour and release albums, including Magnification (2001), before a hiatus in 2004. After a 2008 tour cancellation due to Anderson's health, Benoît David took over as lead singer, followed by Jon Davison in 2012. Chris Squire's passing in 2015 meant no original members remained. Some former members toured as Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman from 2016 to 2018. Alan White, the longest-tenured member, passed away in 2022. Since February 2023, the band consists of Howe, Downes, Davison, Billy Sherwood, and Jay Schellen. Their latest studio album, Aurora, is due in June 2026.
