@oddityvault72: Salvador Allende was inaugurated as Chile's president on November 3, 1970, becoming the first Marxist in Latin America elected head of state through a democratic vote. He won a narrow plurality in September and was confirmed by Congress, then pursued a "Chilean road to socialism" by nationalizing copper and banks and expanding land reform. His term brought inflation, shortages, and sharp polarization, with U.S. opposition adding pressure, and it ended on September 11, 1973, when General Augusto Pinochet's military coup overthrew him. Allende died in the presidential palace during the attack, and Pinochet's long dictatorship followed.
