@kayleethefb: My boyfriend and I had an argument, and I want an outside perspective. We were at a school studio I’d booked, and his friend was coming to hang out while I worked on music. His friend arrived about 1–2 hours late. They started talking about someone proposing to their girlfriend in a studio. It brought up insecurities because I wish I could afford a ring and do those kinds of romantic things for my boyfriend. I told him how I felt and started putting myself down. He mostly sat quietly, then went to another room with his friend. I wanted comfort, and I felt abandoned. Around 1:30 a.m., I was exhausted and upset, so I messaged asking him to help me get a ride home. He showed his friend my messages, and his friend told him to stand up for himself. When I went into the room, they were laughing. They said it was because the situation was awkward, but I felt mocked. I was shaking with anger, though I tried to explain why I was hurt. I explicitly said I wanted to be held when upset. He held me after we got home after 3 a.m. and tried again the next morning, but I was still hurt. We talked, and I cried. Later, he stayed after class without telling me. Communication about plans has been a recurring frustration, and I sent an angry text saying I was tired of it and calling him selfish. I feel like I had to spell out the comfort I needed. Was I expecting too much, and what should each of us have handled differently?

You weren't wrong to want comfort, but you both struggled to communicate your needs clearly. You should try talking about your feelings without using labels like "selfish," and he needs to learn to show up for you when you're vulnerable instead of pulling away.
