South African writing, in both vernacular languages and English, holds a unique position in Black African literature with a multi-generational tradition. Initially overlooked as an independent national literature, it relied on sporadic references in British Empire handbooks. Being a young branch of English literature, it struggled to compete with more established British counterparts. Despite recent attention to Commonwealth literature, South African works faced challenges compared to those from Australia and Canada. Many were written in Afrikaans or other African languages, limiting exposure. Additionally, South African literature reflects a multi-racial society, shaped by white, colored, and black writers.
